Essential: Understanding Portugal’s Regions
Although Portugal is a small country, covering about 92,000 square kilometers, it offers highly diverse and contrasting regions, both geographically and culturally. From north to south, the climate changes, ranging from snowy mountains to paradisiacal beaches. Not only the climate, but also the landscapes, customs, architecture, and culture vary accordingly. You’ll have a wide range of cities to choose, from small villages to more cosmopolitan cities like Porto and Lisbon.
Before selecting the city where you intend to live in Portugal, it is essential to understand how the country is divided.
In total, there are seven distinct regions: North, Central, Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Alentejo, Algarve, Azores (Autonomous Region of the Azores), and Madeira Island (Autonomous Region of Madeira).
My Personal Experience and Opinion…
Before we delve into the list of the best places to live in Portugal, I find it important to share with you my own perspective and the factors that led me to choose the city where my family and I currently reside in Portugal.
As I mentioned, I am also an expat who had to decide, alongside my family, which region and city to settle in Portugal.
Several factors guided our decision, including: 1 – Excellent schools for our two young children, 2 – Welcoming international community for expatriates, 3 – Friendly and residential neighborhood, and 4 – Pleasant climate.
Throughout Portugal, from north to south, the majority of the factors I listed above are present. However, the central region of Lisbon (Lisbon Metropolitan Area) was our chosen destination.
This region encompasses not only the capital city of Lisbon but also 17 other municipalities, including the charming cities of Cascais and Sintra.
It is also the most internationalized region in the country, thus more connected with the expat community.
Additionally, the climate in this area of Portugal is more agreeable. The northern region is colder, while the Alentejo and Algarve regions too hot in the summer.
However, there is another significant reason that led us to choose the Lisbon region!
A place Near An International Airport…
Another fundamental factor that placed Lisbon area at the top of our list is the fact that it is home to the country’s main airport (Humberto Delgado International Airport), with the highest number of international flights and a wide range of airlines operating there.
Remember, as expats, we frequently embark on international travel to visit loved ones in our home countries. Furthermore, one of the reasons my family chose to live in Portugal is the opportunity to be global citizens and travel extensively ✈️😊! The convenience of being near an international airport makes all the difference.
Of course, the city of Porto also boasts an excellent airport (Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport) and is a highly international and welcoming region for foreigners. My family and I love Porto, and we could easily live there! However, the airport in Porto does not operate as many flights as Lisbon’s, and the climate in Porto is considerably colder.
I understand that many of the factors I listed above are personal and subjective. Nevertheless, I wanted to share our experience of moving to Portugal just to illustrate a concrete and real-life decision-making process.

The neighborhood stood out as the perfect choice for my family.
The community is a prestigious residential development located within the municipality of Sintra, in close proximity to both Sintra (15 min) and Cascais (20 min). It is renowned for its nice properties, lush green surroundings, and a wide range of amenities.
With its proximity to Sintra’s historical charm and the vibrant coastal town of Cascais, Quinta da Beloura provides residents with the best of both worlds – a serene retreat surrounded by natural beauty and easy access to urban conveniences.
